Using Avid Artist Color with DaVinci Resolve 9

93cw 700x700 ArtistColorSince adding Avid’s Artist Color to my review system over a year ago, I’ve found it to be a very useful tool. Lately, I have been using the color panel with Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve 9 software with very good results. To make a living as a colorist, you need to work fast. But while you can control software using a keyboard and mouse, you’ll never get the speed needed to do a professional workflow without using a control surface. If you go to the Blackmagic Design website, you can download a chart that will give you all of the function mapping details that will really bring Avid’s Artist Color alive.

GenArts Sapphire 7

Sapphire-7 Sm-2When I tested the GenArts Sapphire 7 VFX plug-in in Adobe Creative Suite 6 (using After Effects and Premiere Pro), I found it to be pretty amazing. In Sapphire 7, GenArts has amassed more than 250 effects with more than 2,500 presets, FX Central and LensFlare designer. The company also sped up its existing plug-ins by up to 20 percent while adding many new plug-ins, with Beauty, EdgeAwareBlur and Advanced Sharpen as the stand-outs.

Focusing in on Boland Monitors

DHD32After five years of using a 17-inch output monitor in my review system, I learned that what I really need was a 24- to 32-inch model for color grading apps because it’s really true that a larger monitor makes it easier to see what’s happening in the shadows. After asking around and doing some research, I chose a 32-inch SEL32 monitor from Boland.

G-Technology G-RAID Mini

StorageReview-G-Technology-G-RAID-miniIn the age of digital media, the storage and easy transport of data is an important part of your workflow process. Since 2011, I’ve been using G-Technology’s G-SPEED Q RAID to back up my data with very good results, so I’m happy to test the 2TB model of the company’s G-RAID mini. With larger RAIDs, it’s all about speed because you’re usually dealing with huge files. With 2TB of storage, the G-RAID mini is designed to be large enough to back up most projects yet be ultra-portable. Because of its small physical size (approximately 6 x 3¼ x 1½ inches), it can be easily transported to an editing facility. Its rugged metal case is one giant heat sink with a very quiet cooling fan, making it a great choice for on-set DIT work.

A Colorist Flight School for DaVinci Resolve

FlightSchoolLearning to use Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve software can be challenging, so I found it important to take advantage of every training opportunity. I had already finished the training offered by Tao of Color with Patrick Inhofer, so when I heard that he was now offering a three-day “Colorist Flight School” with a hands-on workshop, I signed up. The Flight School will be offered in cities across the country, but the first class was held in Atlanta, Ga. at Biscardi Creative Media, which is owned and operated by Walter Biscardi, Jr. of Creative COW fame.
