2612642_300Ever since I got a GoPro HERO2 camera, I’ve been finding all sorts of great uses for it, such as underwater shoots, music videos, POV shots, and attaching it to a bike or car for traveling shots.

And, given its small size and low cost, the GoPro HERO2 makes for some amazing images. The only downside is that the images sometimes have too much of a fisheye look that doesn’t always blend with my other footage — both the horizons and close verticals are bent. Fortunately, there is a fix for only $49.

CrumplePop just released a plug-in for Apple Final Cut Pro X that allows you to remove most of the HERO2’s fisheye look. The result is an image with mostly straight lines, and the plug-in easy to use. Simply go to the Effects area in FCPX and drag the Fisheye Fixer onto your clip. The Fisheye Fixer was created specifically with the GoPro fisheye lens and settings in mind, so it has three corresponding settings built in to save time. Just select Wide, Medium or Narrow to match your footage settings. Another interface tool is the Tune slider, which adjusts the amount of the effect. Basically, that’s all there is to it for correcting most fisheye footage. To fix really bent verticals, I just applied the plug-in a second time and got amazing results. The concave verticals bent the other way and actually became convex, so I simply used the Tune slider to get everything straight.

Some plug-ins can be really slow and take a lot of computing power to process, but this isn’t the case with the Fisheye Fixer. Since the Fisheye Fixer is a native FCPX effect, you can play back your clip in real time without having to wait for rendering. And this applies when using any relatively new Mac Pro, iMac or Mac Mini. I tested it on a Mac Pro, and it worked great.

The Fisheye Fixer was specially designed from the ground up for FCPX. It allows you correct your footage without ever leaving your FCPX editing environment, so you don’t have to roundtrip your footage to other applications. For less hassle and more fun while creating great images, the CrumplePop Fisheye Fixer for GoPro absolutely rocks.
