Claudio Miranda, ASC on Shooting Oblivion

oblivion_smWinner of the 2013 Academy Award for Best Cinematography on Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, Cinematographer Claudio Miranda, ASC recently attended the NAB Show in Las Vegas, Nev. to discuss the breakthrough technology he used on the upcoming sci-fi epic Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman. The DP appeared at a Sony press conference and did a panel discussion moderated by Cinematographer and Film and Digital Times Publisher/Editor Jon Fauer, ASC.

The Novo Micro Digital Cinema Camera

novo4_2For many filmmakers and cinematographers, it’s a dream to have a digital-cinema camera offer the image quality from a full-sized studio camera and the mobility of a palm-sized spy camera. Manufacturers have attempted to fulfill this ideal over the years, most recently with the lamented 720p Flip camera and the GoPro HERO3. While these compact and inexpensive models proved useful, they also had major limitations. Fortunately, View Factor Studios recently introduced a new palm-sized camera to the market. The Novo formally debuted on February 22 and, unlike many other micro HD cameras, it’s available as a rental-only product.

Gangster Squad's Creative Team

This topic was highlighted when Film Independent recently held a discussion with the creative team behind the stylish Warner Bros. film Gangster Squad. The movie’s period look and noir atmosphere was created by a team of talented artisans, including Director Ruben Fleischer, Editors Alan Baumgarten and James Herbert, and Academy Award-nominated Costume Designer Mary Zophres (True Grit). Set in Los Angeles in 1949, Gangster Squad stars Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Nick Nolte, Emma Stone and Sean Penn in an action-packed story that follows Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (played by Penn) and the secret band of cops who want to take him down.

Capturing Live Events

And when the event is as high profile as the Super Bowl, which combines a football game, a half-time show worthy of Broadway, and an audience of hundreds of millions, the stakes are even higher. To prepare for the Super Bowl’s expansive broadcast schedule and telecast from New Orleans, several networks turned to broadcast equipment rental company Bexel to handle their on-site production needs and fiber infrastructure.
