Roger Corman Eyes China

Corman Top 10 originalLegendary Producer/Director Roger Corman is eyeing China as a locale for more indie filmmaking. He has already produced two feature films in China, and has access to several small, independent studios in its cities. “[These studios] were much less expensive than using a major Shanghai studio,” reports Corman, whose positive experience has prompted plans for a third film. Corman and Producer Julie Corman are also launching their new subscription-based “Corman’s Drive-In” channel on YouTube. “We’ll release cult classics and some modern titles and screen the best pictures from six decades,” says the filmmaker. These selections will be handpicked from their vault of more than 400 films. “Roger has always been on the cutting-edge,” says Julie Corman, “and now he’s paving the way for independent filmmakers by testing a new distribution platform.”

Managing the Futuristic Locations of Elysium

Elysium 2 smallWithout a doubt, one of this summer’s most anticipated films is the sci-fi action drama Elysium, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. Written, co-produced and directed by Neill Blomkamp (District 9) and shot by Cinematographer Trent Opaloch, the futuristic film takes place in 2154, where the very wealthy live on Elysium, a high-tech utopian metropolis located in Earth’s orbit. While Elysium’s privileged inhabitants are free from crime, war, poverty, hunger and disease, the have-nots struggle to live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Damon plays Max De Costa, a car-thief-turned-factory-worker on Earth. When an industrial accident leaves him with cancer, he has only five days to get to Elysium to be cured. With the help of a powerful exoskeleton and a few companions, De Costa accepts a dangerous mission that will pit him against Elysium’s Secretary (Foster) and her secret police, led by the violent Kruger (Sharlto Copley).

Grown Ups Sequel Revisits Massachusetts

GrownUps 2Hollywood big-kid Adam Sandler’s new comedy Grown Ups 2 will grab the attention of anyone who loved the pro golfing hijinks in the hit Happy Gilmore. A sequel to the 2010 release Grown Ups, the film recast the same great ensemble, featuring Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Salma Hayek. Taking place three years after the first film, the story finds Lenny Feder (Sandler) and his family back in the small town where he and his friends grew up, and the grown-ups must learn lessons from their kids on the last day of school. Written by Adam Sandler, Fred Wolf and Tim Herlihy, the film was directed by Sandler’s longtime collaborator Dennis Dugan and produced by Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures and Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions.
