DGA to Honor Director Milos Forman

milas formanDirectors Guild of America President Taylor Hackford announced that acclaimed Director Milos Forman will receive the Guild’s top honor. The filmmaker will be presented with the DGA Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Achievement in Motion Picture Direction at the 65th Annual DGA Awards in Los Angeles, Calif. on February 2. “It is a tremendous privilege to present the DGA Lifetime Achievement Award for feature film to one of the greatest filmmakers of our time, Milos Forman,” said Hackford. “No matter what subject or genre he tackles, Milos finds the universality of the human experience in every story, allowing us, his rapt audience, to recognize ourselves within the struggle for free expression and self-determination that Milos so aptly portrays on the silver screen.”

Academy's Governors Awards Honor the Guys Behind the Scenes

floor-1The Academy's fourth Governors Awards ceremony, which took place on Saturday night at the Roy Dolby Ballroom at the Hollywood & Highland Center, is a far different event from the show that will take place a few yards away in the same center on Feb. 24 – but it featured a lot of the same people who are expected to be inside the Dolby Theatre on Oscar night.

Steven Spielberg, Tom Hooper, Kathryn Bigelow, Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, Joe Wright, Robert Zemeckis and Benh Zeitlin were among the directors in the house, while the acting contingent included Amy Adams, Kristen Stewart, John Hawkes, Helen Hunt, Bradley Cooper and Jackie Weaver.

2012 Hollywood Post Alliance Awards

hpaa_logo_2012_webcolor The Hollywood Post Alliance has announced the nominees for the 2012 HPA Awards. The Awards honor excellence in post production and bring recognition to the achievements of individuals and companies who are engaged in significant and revolutionary work in post production. The nominees in the 12 craft categories were chosen from a field of talented and innovative entries in color grading, editing, sound, and compositing for motion pictures, commercials and television. This year marked the largest number of entries in the Awards' history. The winners of the 2012 HPA Awards will be announced at a gala evening at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA on November 1st, 2012.

Hawk Koch Elected Academy President

kochProducer Hawk Koch was just elected as president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and is temporarily stepping down from his position as co-president of the Producers Guild of America.

Koch, who is beginning his ninth year as a governor representing the Producers Branch, has served as first vice president of the Academy during the past year. He previously served three one-year terms as treasurer and one term as vice president. In addition, Public Relations Branch governor Cheryl Boone Isaacs was elected first vice president; Producers Branch governor Kathleen Kennedy

AICP Digital Reveals Guidelines For Production Expectations

aicp-logoMatt Miller, President and CEO of the Association of Independent Commercial Producers (AICP) and Dustin Callif, Executive Producer, Digital, at Tool, and President of AICP Digital, recently unveiled guidelines for digital production. The document outlines best business practices for digitally produced content, including interactive, visual effects, design, and animation.

“These guidelines help to establish a roadmap for good business practices. We hope that all companies that produce content digitally - as well as their clients - will use this document to shape expectations,” said Miller. “This new resource creates a framework for discussing business terms, and through constant use, will become the industry standard."

A Conversation with AFCI Executive Director Martin Cuff

Now more than ever, film commissioners are playing a vital role in the production process. Martin Cuff, the executive director of the Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI), has worked extensively in economic development and provided strategic support to governments on many continents at national, state, provincial and city levels. He now has the arduous role of managing the organization that sets the standards on how film commissioners work and service the entertainment industry. Comprised of more than 300 film commissions from around the world, the AFCI is a non-profit educational association whose members serve as city, county, state, regional, provincial or national film commissioners for their respective governmental jurisdictions. 

In preparation for this month’s AFCI Location Show in Los Angeles, Calif., P3 Update Editor James Thompson spoke with Cuff about the AFCI, film commissioners, and the future of the entertainment industry.

Stephen Lighthill Elected President of the American Society of Cinematographers

Stephen Lighthill has been elected to serve as president of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC). The vote was made by the newly elected Board Of Governors who also elected ASC Officers, Vice Presidents Richard Crudo, Daryn Okada and Kees Van Oostrum; Treasurer Victor J. Kemper; Secretary Fred Goodich; and Sergeant-at-Arms Steven Fierberg.

Guild of Television Cameramen establishes the Bill Vinten GTC University Award

The Guild of Television Cameramen, in co-operation with Bill Vinten, has established the Bill Vinten GTC University Award to recognise universities and graduates who demonstrate outstanding camera craft skills. The award includes the Bill Vinten University Trophy for the successful graduate's faculty, college or university.

Cinematographer Anette Haellmigk to Receive Kodak Vision Award

anette haellmigk by sean moeKodak Vision Award will be presented to Cinematographer Anette Haellmigk, who's credits include  three seasons of HBO's Big Love. The award will be presented at the 2012 Women in Film (WIF) Crystal + LucyR Awards in Los Angeles on June 12. The award is given annually to a female filmmaker with outstanding achievements in cinematography, who also collaborates with and assists women in the entertainment industry.

The International Documentary Association Presents DOC U: A CONVERSATION WITH STEVE JAMES

This month’s Doc U features an in-depth conversation with Steve James, the award-winning producer-director of Hoop Dreams, the landmark documentary hailed by critic Roger Ebert as "the great American documentary." Eddie Schmidt, the International Documentary Association's Board President and himself an Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker, will lead you through a behind-the-scenes look at James’ remarkable career, process and his work on such award-winning films as Stevie, which won numerous festivals and landed on a dozen ten best lists for 2003; The War Tapes, which James produced and edited, and won the Tribeca Film Festival Grand Prize in 2006; At the Death House Door, which won numerous awards at festivals and was James’ fourth film to be short-listed for an Academy Award; CINE Eagle award-winner No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson for  the IDA Award-winning ESPN “30 for 30” series; and James’ most recent film, The Interrupters, his sixth documentary produced with Kartemquin Films, which premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

Society of Operating Cameramen Honors Their Own

The Society of Camera Operators (SOC) announces that their 2011 Lifetime Achievement Awards gala, held at Warner Brothers Studios on February 5th played to a full house. SOC members and friends gathered to honor their own with golden CAMMYs for the best of the industry’s camera artists as well as Technical Achievement Awards presented to companies who have made significant contributions to the art of camera. In addition, the event raises awareness of the SOC’s ongoing charity, the Vision Center at Children’s Hospital, Los Angeles.
