Screen TexasAdam Sandler / Jason Reitman Film Shooting in Austin: We have just gotten word that preproduction has started on Adam Sandler’s new film called Men, Women, and Children.

The flick is being directed by Jason Reitman (Up In The Air, Juno, Young Adult) and is set to start shooting in Austin in early December. Sandler is starring in the film, based on the novel by Chad Kultgen, and is being joined by Jennifer Garner, and Rosemary DeWitt.

The film will be nothing like Sandler’s usual silly, comedy-driven works. Instead Men, Women, and Children is a little more “adult-themed” focusing on the sexual pressures of teens and their parents and is expected to be shocking & salacious. Local casting for real high schoolers to fill the lead teen roles has already begun and will continue through early November.

Austin on the list of shooting locations for Jeff Nichols’ Midnight Special: Director Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter) is teaming up again with one of his fave actors, Michael Shannon in the sci-fi film Midnight Special.

The film has been described as John Carpenter-esque and is about a father and son who go on the run because the child possesses special powers. Although still scouting locations, Austin, TX has reported to be one of the shoot locations.

No stranger to Central Texas, Nichols shot part of his film Mud in Austin. Kirsten Dunst, & Joel Edgerton are slated to star in the film as well. Casting in Austin & New Orleans (and even an open call in Las Vegas) for a young boy have already been taking place this fall. They are specifically looking for an unknown Caucasian boy between 6-10 to be considered for the lead role in the film. The film is scheduled to shoot in January or February 2014.

20th Anniversary of Austin Film Festival begins next week: The 20th Annual Austin Film Festival kicks off next week Thursday. One of the highlights of the fest (besides the 180+ films screening) is the Extraordinary Contribution to Filmmaking Awards Luncheon.

This year, Susan Sarandon is the Actor Honoree and will be present to accept her award and partake in a creative discussion at the Awards Luncheon on October 27th at the Austin Club. Other awardees attending are Vince Gilligan (the creator of "Breaking Bad") being honored as Outstanding Television Writer, Jonathan Demme (director of The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia) for Extraordinary Contribution to Filmmaking, Callie Khory (screenwriter for Nashville, Thelma & Louise) as Distinguished Screenwriter, and Barry Josephson (producer for "Bones," "Enchanted") receiving the Heart of Film Award.

Vince Gilligan will also be hosting a handful of panels at the Conference during the festival and will feature a staged reading of his feature-length screenplay 2 Face. Cast in attendance for the reading includes Will Ferrell, Linda Cardellini, and Thomas Haden Church.

We are looking forward to attending the Austin Film Festival this coming week. We will report back with our local Texas highlights.
