Rob Sephton Joins TODD-SOUNDELUX

Post production sound company TODD-SOUNDELUX recently announced that Supervising Sound Editor and Sound Designer Rob Sephton has joined the organization. Sephton, whose credits include Remember the Titans; Spirited Away; The Smurfs; Pearl Harbor and Armageddon, most recently completed work on The Smurfs 2 for director Raja Gosnell.

Even though Hollywood has been doing multichannel audio mixing for over 70 years, the sound technicians and artists behind today’s mixes take nothing for granted. To get a feel for today’s audio postproduction tools and techniques, I visited two of the hottest boutique post houses in town. SonicPool and 5 Guys Named Moe offer state-of-the-art equipment and software and a full range of postproduction services, and both have corporate cultures that focus on strong customer service. The co-founders of these boutique houses both feel that the size of their companies enables them to offer more personal service. “Being a small company helps us be more efficient,” says SonicPool Co-Founder Patrick Bird. “We try to operate as if we’re a production’s post department rather than an outside facility.”

Obtaining optimal sound quality while recording on set can be an arduous task for production sound mixers. Let’s face it, exploding bombs, rapid-fire machine guns, massive tanks and even spaceships can get obnoxiously loud — and they can create challenging sound problems on set. To resolve these issues, Automated Dialogue Replacement (ADR), or the process of re-recording dialogue in post to improve or clarify the diction of the actors, has become an essential part of film and TV production.

A Toast to Post Music

More and more filmmakers are turning to music libraries to help with their storytelling needs. And while music libraries have been around for decades, who uses them and how has changed.
