Digital Domain Media Group (DDMG), the former parent company of the west coast VFX house co-founded by James Cameron and Stan Winston (which is now owned by China's Galloping Horse and Reliance MediaWorks), is selling its portfolio of patents to the Beverly Hills-based RealD as part of its bankruptcy reorganization. DDMG originally purchased the patents in 2010 from In-Three, the company behind the successful 3D conversion of the Disney film Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. RealD has yet to make an announcement about the use or licensing of those patents.

The ultimate status of the patent portfolio is apparently up in the air due to the license agreements that In-Three entered into prior to selling its patents to DDMG. According to reports, Disney has filed paperwork with the court claiming that it had “an unlimited, non-exclusive, perpetual worldwide license” for its use of the technology from In-Three that should endure through the sale. However, the bankruptcy court found that Disney has a limited license to continue using the former In-Three patents, specifically in relation to its films G Force and Alice in Wonderland. Disney has recently indicated that it plans to appeal the court’s decision.
