Matthews 40th Anniversary Celebration

Events_Matthews5There aren’t many companies that can boast 40 years of solid business. Matthews Studio Equipment (MSE) not only has that privilege, the company can also brag about its legacy as a top grip manufacture and service company that has been a mainstay in Hollywood and now the world, as it facilitates clients in more than 70 countries.
To celebrate this significant occasion, Matthews threw an extravagant party at the Marina del Ray Hotel in Marina del Ray, Calif. The event had a tropical Hawaiian setting that included a large stage for a Beach Boys cover band as they performed many memorable songs, and tables had MICROgrip centerpieces from Matthews’ inventory.
As party guests arrived on a red carpet, they were photographed and presented with Hawaiian leis. This warm welcome was followed by drinks, delicious barbeque and visits from celebrity lookalikes, including Lucille Ball and Austin Powers. A “Grip Olympics” course was set up to include a boa bag toss, putting course (with grip heads and arms on the putters) and doorway dolly race. Winners were awarded iPods and other gifts.
Events_Matthews2The highlight of the evening was when a large cake replica that was wheeled out on the floor and a lovely lady popped out followed by Matthews President and CEO Ed Phillips. Phillips thanked those in attendance for sharing this special occasion and acknowledged people who have been an important part of Matthews’ history. He then took a pair of drumsticks, saying, “It’s been a long time,” and entertained the audience by playing drums and singing with the band.
Matthews has come a long way since Key Grip Roy Isaia gave up his day job and formed Matthews in 1970. Phillips supervised the construction of this new enterprise and eventually became its owner. Now 40 years later, it’s become apparent that Matthews Studio Equipment has evolved into a premier manufacture and service company for film, television, theatrical and still photography industries throughout the world.
