This year’s American Film Market (AFM) was another success, featuring over 400 films from 33 countries for interested buyers among nearly 8,000 attendees. The 357 exhibitors represented a broad spectrum of independent producers and sales agents, showcasing features ranging from micro-budget thrillers to studio epics that are all in various stages of production. Premiering films offered a who’s who of star talent, such as Jessica Chastain, James Franco, Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis, Judi Dench and Jesse Eisenberg. These high-profile movies include Harry and the Butler (starring Michael Caine and Samuel L. Jackson), Very Good Girls (starring Dakota Fanning, Elizabeth Olsen, Demi Moore and Richard Dreyfuss) and Survivor (starring Milla Jovavich, Emma Thompson and Pierce Brosnan).
The 2013 Hollywood Post Alliance (HPA) Awards were recently handed out at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. The HPA recognizes postproduction companies and individuals for their outstanding contributions in creating feature films, television shows, commercials and visual entertainment for worldwide enjoyment. A full audience of industry insiders and luminaries attended the eighth annual gala to spotlight the most innovative leaders in postproduction with three special honors and awards in 12 creative categories. One such winner is Avid, which was honored with the prestigious Charles S. Swartz Award for Outstanding Contribution in the Field of Postproduction. Avid President/CEO Louis Hernandez, Jr. accepted the award on behalf of the company. Other special awards included Engineering Excellence and the HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation in Postproduction.
The annual Digital Hollywood conference continues to grow, and the 2013 event offered an impressive lineup of speakers that included artists, producers, executives and techies. Event Producer Victor Harwood and his team assembled a comprehensive and, at times, overwhelming mix of panels to address a wide array of topics, such as the backend infrastructure of online data storage and the growing distribution of Web content as the successor to cable TV networks.
The 19th annual California On Location Awards (COLA) recently bestowed its awards to film and television industry location professionals for professional excellence in 10 categories. Held at the historic Beverly Hilton Hotel in California, the event welcomed a capacity audience of entertainment industry professionals and was steered by Master of Ceremonies Perry King, a veteran film, television and theater actor.
The 2013 American Film Market (AFM) features an impressive who’s who of global industry talent, including many award-worthy film and television icons. One such talent is Oscar-winning Director Ron Howard, whose new music documentary Made in America (starring Eddie Vedder, Jay Z, Kanye West and many other notable musicians) will premiere among the 402 films showcased at this year’s event. AFM 2013 will include 321 market premieres and 75 world premieres in 30 languages from 51 countries, while the annual market, which launched in 1981, will host over 8,000 buyers and industry professionals from more than 70 countries.
