Alberta Film, a branch of the Government of Alberta, supports the growth, sustainability, competitiveness and business attraction of Alberta’s screen-based industries. A unique mix competitive incentives, crew expertise and diverse locations helps Alberta Film maintain its commitment to making Alberta a destination of choice for productions from around the world. Alberta offers a unique production incentive in the form of a grant against all eligible production expenses incurred in Alberta including post-production, special effects, all rentals, animation, set construction & props, craft services, all Alberta labour, food & accommodations, in-province travel and out of province production airfare, and all production services. Alberta will contribute between 20 to 29 per cent of all eligible expenses up to $5 million Cdn per project. This is equivalent to a 36 to 53 per cent labour-based tax credit. Alberta’s level of contribution increases with Albertan ownership and the employment of Albertan key creative personnel. In addition, Alberta continues to be the only Canadian province with no provincial sale tax making doing business here even more cost-effective. Alberta is also home to expert crews that have been nominated for 48 Academy Awards since 1948 and have received 22 Emmy Award wins out of 92 nominations. Crews are highly skilled in working on all forms of production including small and large budget feature films, series, pilots, made-for-television movies, documentaries, lifestyle programs and commercial production including projects such as Heartland, Inception, Brokeback Mountain, Fear Itself, and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Alberta also boasts and incredible range of diverse location including superb natural locations that can double for anywhere in the world as well as standing sets, a studio and state-of-the-art post-production facilities. The Alberta Film Development Program (AFDP) offers a competitive and flexible incentive program equivalent to a labour tax credit between 25 to 42 per cent. Alberta’s unique production incentive is in the form of a grant against all eligible production expenses incurred in Alberta including post-production, special effects, rentals, set construction and props, animation, craft services, all Alberta labour, food and accommodations. In addition, Alberta continues to be the only Canadian province with no provincial sale tax making doing business here even more cost-effective. Alberta is home to expert crews that have been nominated for 48 Academy Awards since 1948 and have received 22 Emmy Award wins out of 92 nominations. Crews are highly skilled in working on North American, European and Bollywood productions including small and large budget feature films, series, pilots, made-for-television movies, documentaries, lifestyle programs and commercial production. Recent Alberta projects include Fear Itself (an anthology series for NBC), Passchendaele (feature film), Heartland (television series), Freezer Burn (feature film) and The Wild Roses (television series). Alberta has also been home to other major projects including Brokeback Mountain, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee and Broken Trail. Such projects have not only taken advantage of Alberta’s expert crews but the incredible range of diverse locations Alberta provides for any type of project. Alberta offers locations that can depict a dizzying array of time periods, landscapes and buildings including dusty western trails, frozen arctic tundra, graffiti scarred inner-city battlegrounds and war-torn deserts. In addition to superb natural locations, Alberta offers a number of standing sets, a studio and state-of-the-art post-production facilities. Edmonton features a 15,000 square foot studio including wardrobe and production office space. Retro fit warehouse space available in Calgary, which includes production office space. Calgary also has three smaller studios with 11,000 square feet of studio space combined. Numerous post-production facilities are available in both Edmonton and Calgary. Saskatchewan Film and Video Development Corporation
Saskatchewan offers a combination of tax credit incentives, state-of-the-art production studios, experienced producers, skilled production crew and comprehensive locations services. The Saskatchewan Film Employment Tax Credit is among the most competitive and comprehensive tax credit programs in the world offering a tax credit of up to 55% of eligible labour per project. The 45% base tax credit includes above-the-line and below-the-line Saskatchewan and deemed labour. An additional 5% is achieved by filming a portion of a project 25 miles outside of Saskatchewan’s major centers and a further 5% is achieved by hiring Saskatchewan production crew in 6/10 positions specified by the program. Out-of-province mentors may be deemed as local labour when no Saskatchewan resident is available or when the mentor is hired specifically to train a Saskatchewan resident in addition to his or her regular duties. The Canada Saskatchewan Production Studios contain four stages of varying sizes totaling 30,475 square feet, unencumbered 40 foot ceiling heights, fully-furnished production offices and a complete array of support facilities and services including wardrobe, carpentry, paint, makeup/hair and dressing rooms. SaskFilm’s comprehensive locations services include: script breakdown services; access to an extensive locations photo film library; location scouting throughout the province; liaison with all levels of government; facilitation of co-production opportunities; and information on financial incentives and services.
